How to Use Groundhog Day to Teach an Animal Adaptations Science Lesson
Groundhog Day is more than just a day to predict the weather — it’s the perfect opportunity to teach a science lesson about animal adaptations and how groundhogs survive in winter! This student friendly lesson focuses on hibernation and the unique adaptations of groundhogs which allow them to survive.
Below in the blog post, I share how to assess prior knowledge, use photos to initiate discussion, observe like a scientist, write using supporting details, make a craft and a few more activities that your first grade students will be excited about.
Make Science More Meaningful this Groundhog Day
Help your students discover the fascinating world of animal adaptations while celebrating Groundhog Day.
Create a chart to complete with your students before teaching and then again at the end of the lessons to add what was learned.
Use Photos of Animal Adaptations
Photos help students see the external body parts that help the animal survive. How does a tail help this groundhog?
Discuss and Hypothesize Purpose
Students will learn new vocabulary words as external body parts are focused on.
Confirm Purpose of Adaptation
Provide Reasons in Writing
Get Crafty and Make a Headband
Groundhogs are incredible creatures that have the perfect adaptations that help them survive and endure the cold winter months. Teach your students about these amazing adaptations:
Thick Fur: Groundhogs rely on their dense fur coats to stay warm during freezing temperatures.
Sharp Claws: These are essential for digging deep burrows that provide protection from predators and harsh weather.
Small Ears: Groundhogs’ compact ears stops dirt from entering their body as they dig burrows.
Tail: This animal’s tail helps it balance while sitting up on its hind legs.
Hibernation: Groundhogs are true hibernators! Although not a physical adaptation, this behavior slows their body down significantly, with heart rates dropping and body temperatures falling to just above freezing.
Try This in your Classroom
You can get all of these materials to use with your class.
